Today we made a delicious wheatgrass juice from our homegrown wheatgrass, which you can enjoy with your furry friend! Wheatgrass is packed with nutrients like chlorophyll, amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It is safe for your dog in moderation – a pinch of wheatgrass powder goes a long way!

I like to add super greens blend supplement into Bowie's diet, which has wheatgrass, barley grass, chlorella and spirulina. I also sometimes use pure wheatgrass powder when I formulate Bowie's meal to make it complete and balanced.

Growing your own wheatgrass is pretty easy. There are plenty of tutorial videos online, just do a quick google search! If you decide to grow wheatgrass, here are our tips:
- Get organic, non-GMO wheatgrass seeds
- Soak the wheatgrass seeds in lukewarm water to initiate germination. Drain and rinse every 8 hours and soak 2–3 more times. You'll see the seeds start to sprout. If not, don't worry! You can start sowing your seeds onto the soil.
- Place the seeds on the surface of the soil (don't bury them!). The more seeds you sow, the denser your grass will grow.
- Cover with damp newspaper or paper towel and continue to mist it as needed so that it does not dry out. The seeds should sprout in about 2–3 days. Remove the newspaper or paper towel.
- At this stage, make sure the wheatgrass gets plenty of indirect sunlight and good air circulation (esp. if you grow indoor). Continue to mist thoroughly as the grass grows. You can also mix a seaweed fertiliser with water when misting.
- Harvest the wheatgrass in 7–10 days or when 15–20 cm tall by cutting the grass at 2–3 cm above the soil, leaving the roots. Peak nutrition is when wheatgrass reaches the ‘jointing stage’, which is when the plant switches from vegetative growth to reproductive growth, as the blade develops a second stem. This is when the grass is at its sweetest and most nutritious.
- Your grass will grow continuously, so don't afraid to cut it back occasionally. This will encourage growth without allowing the grass to develop seed heads.
- Mold can develop just above the soil, on the lower part of the stalks. To prevent this happen, make sure you don't waterlog the wheatgrass. Allow the water to drain properly and make sure there is plenty of air circulation and sunlight.
